Respectful Workplace Behaviour

Whilst mediation is highly effective for most workplace disputes, it is far better to prevent disputes. Workplace Bullying, and Harassment are often at the core of workplace disputes and are not to be tolerated in any Australian workplace. All states have legislation that addresses these behaviours, and all employers are responsible for detecting and preventing workplace bullying and harassment in their workplaces. With the Harmonisation of OHS Legislation in Australia (many of the states' laws are now under the one set of laws) new OHS laws passed in Victoria are sure to be adopted by other states. Known as Brodie's Law, after a young waitress who tragically jumped to her death, after relentless bullying at work, are tough new laws, that will see up to 10 year prison terms for those employers who allow bullying and employees who bully in the workplace.

It is vital that ALL staff and management, from contractors and part time workers, full time workers, to middle and upper management, are aware of what bullying is (as well as what it isn't), what to do if they are a victim, and how to respond appropriately if they witness it. Respectful Workplace Behaviour training also puts bullies on notice that their bullying behaviour needs to change.
